Ryoji Koie was a Japanese ceramic artist known for his energetic and experimental approach to clay. Born in Tokoname, one of Japan’s historic pottery centres, he studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts.

Koie explored a wide range of techniques including wood-fired stoneware, porcelain, and sculptural ceramic forms. His work often embraces the raw qualities of clay and the transformative effects of firing, producing vessels with dramatic textures and expressive surfaces.

Alongside his studio practice he taught for many years at Nagoya University of Arts, influencing a younger generation of ceramic artists. His work has been widely exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections.
