Okabe Mineo
1919–1990
岡部嶺男
Okabe Mineo was a Japanese ceramic artist renowned for his innovative approach to traditional Japanese pottery. Born in Seto, one of Japan's most historic ceramic centres, he developed an exceptional command of ceramic techniques from an early age, including those associated with Momoyama and Koseto wares. These early experiments established the technical foundations of a highly individual artistic practice.
Throughout his career Okabe continually reinterpreted historic ceramic traditions through a distinctly modern sensibility. Working across Ao-Oribe, Kiseto, Beni-Shino, ash glaze, Jōmon-inspired forms, celadon and tenmoku, he developed an intensely personal approach to the transformation of clay and glaze through firing. His work is characterised by a remarkable balance between technical mastery, material experimentation and expressive form.
Okabe's ceramics received widespread acclaim in Japan and internationally, earning numerous awards and considerable recognition during his lifetime. Today he is regarded as one of the leading figures in post-war Japanese ceramics, admired for the originality with which he bridged historical traditions and contemporary expression.
