Miwa Jusetsu (Kyusetsu XI) continued the distinguished Miwa family tradition of Hagi ware in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Born into the Miwa pottery lineage, he studied painting before turning to ceramics under the guidance of his elder brother, Miwa Kyusetsu X (Kyuwa). In 1981 he succeeded his brother as head of the Miwa kiln, becoming Kyusetsu XI.

While rooted in the traditions of Hagi pottery, Jusetsu developed a highly individual approach that expanded the sculptural possibilities of the medium. He became particularly known for Oni-Hagi (“Devil Hagi”), a distinctive style characterised by dramatic, textured surfaces and thick white glazes that emphasise the raw material presence of clay.

His work was widely exhibited and collected in Japan and internationally. In 1983 he was designated a Living National Treasure in recognition of his contribution to the development of modern Hagi ceramics.
