Kuriki Tatsusuke was a ceramic artist known for his disciplined approach to form and surface. Born in Seto, one of Japan’s historic pottery centres, he studied at Kyoto City University of Arts under Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kondō Yūzō.
Kuriki developed vessels in which structure and decoration are closely integrated. Using paper-resist techniques and metallic glazes he created rhythmic bands of pattern that follow the geometry of the form.
His work was exhibited in major Japanese exhibitions including the Nitten and the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition. He later taught at Kyoto City University of Arts where he influenced a younger generation of ceramic artists.
